Author Catherine Chapman was recently published in New York with her children’s book on healthy eating.
Her book was endorsed by Diabetes ACT. Catherine is passionate about helping raise awareness and funds for diabetes, as her husband and his family have a history of diabetes. Her nephew also suffers with type 1 diabetes and both her children are at risk.
Catherine created a series of characters and named them the take 5 plus 2 team. The team challenge everyone to eat five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day.
As a philanthropic endevour she had a collection of key rings and stickers developed to help raise much needed funds for Diabetes ACT and the Heart Foundation ACT.
Catherine’s characters were so well received that she decided to write stories about them.
Research has shown children are more likely to eat healthy if characters are involved and so Catherine decided due to the popularity of her characters that she would write stories relating to thier personalities. Each character would have thier own engaging story for children to relate to.
The focus has been purposefully shifted from traditional, dietry advice to a new concept involving the characterization of fruit and vegetables in a friendly and entertaining way to ensure the interest of young children.
Laurel Davies from Diabetes ACT has initiated a healthy eating challenge using Catherine’s characters the take 5 plus 2 team to encourage children to eat healthy for a week. The challenge has been introduced to many schools who are very excited about being part of raising the awareness of diabetes and encouraging children to eat healthy.
Catherine’s first book “Posh Pear” (a character she based on herself) is now available on this website and in selected bookstores.
All books will be beautifully illustrated and you can collect the whole series.
A percentage of book sales will be donated to Diabetes ACT and the Heart Foundation ACT.
Friends of the take 5 plus 2 team are also being developed along with story books and recipes.
Sue Marriage CEO of the Phisyical Activity Foundation is also embracing the team. She will be visiting many schools in Canberra with Posh Pear and the latest character Busybop Broccoli (who will be performing his hip hop dancing) It’s sure to be a huge hit with all the kids,so get your school on board so you don’t miss out!
